Why is he laughing?

My introduction to working with fish skins came while I had a brief side gig processing sturgeon skins for bow makers. Eventually I learned that one can tan a fish skin and attempted to tan a sturgeon. The sturgeon laughed, refusing to be tanned. Years later, I developed a method to get tolerably soft sturgeon leather. I enjoy a challenge.

Since then, I have been tanning other local fish including salmon, halibut, ling cod, and others. I have had many great teachers including Jim Riggs, Goode Jones, Matt Richards, Janey Chang, Joe Manthei, Lotta Rahme, Hanna Nore, and others. Most of the methods I use are rooted in ancient scandanavian traditions.

I teach fish tanning at a few yearly events including Echoes in Time, Rabbitstick, and Seastone.
